Sales Tax Calculator

Sales tax in the United States is set by states and local areas, so there is no single rate. Type the combined rate for your location to see the tax and the total, or start from a receipt total to find the price before tax.

How it works

Tax is the price times the rate divided by 100. A 50.00 item at 8.25% has 4.13 of tax, for a total of 54.13. To go backwards from a total, divide by 1 plus the rate: 54.13 ÷ 1.0825 gives 50.00 before tax.

Questions

Where do I find my sales tax rate?

Your state revenue department publishes rates, and many places add city or county tax on top. Use the combined rate for the place of sale.

How do I find the price before tax from a receipt?

Choose "already includes sales tax" and enter the total. The calculator divides it by 1 plus the rate.

Is sales tax the same as VAT?

No. Sales tax is usually charged only at the final sale, while VAT is charged at each stage of the supply chain. The percentage maths is the same.
