VAT Calculator

Work out the VAT on a net price, or find the net price inside a gross one. The calculator suggests common rates for your country, and you can type a different rate whenever your goods or services use another one.

How it works

Net to gross: multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. Gross to net: divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, a net price of 100 becomes 120. Going the other way, 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100, so the VAT is 20. A common mistake is taking 20% off the gross price, which gives 96 and is wrong.

Questions

Why is taking 20% off a gross price wrong?

The VAT is 20% of the net price, not of the gross price. Dividing 120 by 1.20 gives the correct 100. Taking 20% off 120 gives 96, which understates the net price.

Are the suggested rates always right for me?

No. They are common rates and can change, and many countries have reduced rates for certain goods. Check the current rate with your tax office or accountant.

Can I use this for GST or other sales taxes?

Yes. The maths is the same for any percentage tax added to a price, so you can type any rate.
