Markup Calculator
Set a selling price from what an item costs you. Use it when you price by adding a fixed percentage on top of cost.
How it works
Selling price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100). A cost of 250 with a 40% markup gives a price of 350 and a profit of 100. The margin on that sale is 100 ÷ 350 = 28.57%.
Questions
How do I get a target margin instead?
Divide the cost by 1 minus the margin as a decimal. For a 30% margin on a cost of 70, the price is 70 ÷ 0.7 = 100.
Should tax be included in the cost?
If you can claim the tax back, usually use the cost before tax. Otherwise include it. Your accountant can confirm which applies to you.
Why is my markup higher than my margin?
Markup is measured against the smaller number, the cost, so the same profit gives a higher percentage.
