Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator
Work out what to charge from what you need to earn. Count only billable hours, because admin, sales and holidays do not get paid.
How it works
Hourly rate = (target income + yearly costs) ÷ (billable hours per week × working weeks per year). A target of 600,000 plus 100,000 of costs, over 25 billable hours for 46 weeks, needs about 609 an hour.
Questions
How many billable hours are realistic?
Many freelancers bill fewer hours than they work. Track your own week and use that number.
Should I include tax in my target income?
Use the income you want before tax, or add your expected tax to costs. This calculator does not work out your tax.
Is this what the market pays?
No. It shows what you need, not what clients pay. Compare it with rates in your field.
Results are estimates for planning. They are not tax, legal or financial advice.
